During your stay you can explore the numerous small villages which are dotted about the countryside, each with its own individual charm, or pay a visit to the country town of Kirkcudbright which is well known in art circles for its historical connections with the 'Glasgow Boys'.

The Thompson family who have owned the Clonyard for over 35 years spent many years prior to this in East Africa. This affinity to that continent can still be seen around the hotel.

Take the A711 to Dalbeattie (14 miles); the hotel is 4 miles south of Dalbeattie on the A710.

•  Threave Castle (7.12 Miles) - Archibald the Grim built this lonely castle in the late 14th century. It stands on an islet in the River Dee, and is four storeys high with round towers guarding the outer wall. The island is reached by boat.
