Travelling from the South, take Junction 17 on the m74 (second exit marked Lockerbie). Travelling from the North, take Junction 17 (the first exit marked Lockerbie). The hotel is clearly signposted from the roundabout at the motorway exit, by brown tourist signs. Local Attractions : •  Robert Burns House (11.26 Miles) - Robert Burns house is situated in a quiet street in Dumfries. It was here that Robert Burns spent the last three years of his short life; he died here in 1796. The house retains much of its 18th-century character and contains many fascinating items connected with Scotland's national poet. There is the desk and chair in which he wrote his last works including the famous Kilmarnock and Edinburgh editions of his work. This is the house where the poet died in 1976. Each year Scots and lovers of Burns' poetry everywhere celebrate Burns night on or around his birthday on 25th January •  Burns Mausoleum (11.24 Miles) - The mausoleum is in the form of a Greek temple, and contains the tombs of Robert Burns, his wife Jean Armour, and their five sons. A sculptured group shows the Muse of Poetry flinging her cloak over Burns at the plough. •  Savings Banks Museum (10.32 Miles) - Housed in the building where Savings Banks first began, the museum traces their growth and development from 1810 up to the present day. The museum also traces the life of Dr Henry Duncan, father of savings banks, and restorer of the Ruthwell Cross. Multi- •  Ruthwell Cross (9.60 Miles) - Now in a specially built apse in the parish church, the carved cross dates from the 7th or 8th centuries. Two faces show scenes from the Life of Christ; the others show scroll work, and parts of an ancient poem in Runic characters. It was broken up in the •  Old Bridge House Museum (11.54 Miles) - The Old Bridge House was built in 1660, and is the oldest house in Dumfries.
